Residency TrainingCHPRB Accredited ProgramsAlberta Health Services, Red Deer (Central Zone)Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre 3942 50A Avenue Red Deer, AB, T4N 4E7 Director: Dorothy George Type: General Program highlights: The Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre residents will be exposed to a community hospital environment in central Alberta. The residency program is an experiential education program that develops proactive, accountable, responsible pharmacist practitioners and leaders. Emphasis will be placed on skill development. The pharmacists and residents provide direct patient care and collaborate with the health care team, including family physicians and specialists. The Red Deer Regional Hospital is located in Red Deer (pop. Approx. 90,000) which is 1.5 hours from Edmonton and Calgary and provides convenient access to many outdoor activities in Alberta. Required rotations: Clinical rotations include general medicine (6 weeks), cardiology (4 weeks), critical care (4 weeks) and liaison pharmacist/precepting (4 weeks). Other required rotations include drug information (3 weeks, divided; longitudinal activities throughout year), project (no more than 10 weeks), distribution (3 weeks) and administration (2 weeks). The resident is not expected to perform dispensary coverage outside of the residency program. Elective rotations: Chosen in conjunction with the resident and may include: emergency medicine, anticoagulation clinic, palliative care, nephrology, heart failure clinic, medication safety and rural practice. External rotations accounting for less than 25% of the residency year may also be arranged, if requested by the resident. Three electives, four weeks in length are typically scheduled. Minimum required credentials: Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy (or equivalent). Registration as a Pharmacy Intern with the Alberta College of Pharmacists prior to beginning the program and achievement of registration as a Pharmacist with the Alberta College of Pharmacists within 6 months of beginning the program. Active Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists membership is required. Experience in a hospital setting is an asset but not required.
