RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Est. stipend: 85% of a starting Hospital Pharmacist salary (approx $50,000/year plus benefits)

Benefits: medical, dental

Vacation/holiday leave: 2 weeks paid

Education/conference leave: 1 week

Program highlights: General residency program designed to provide the resident with a comprehensive knowledge of hospital pharmacy practice. Emphasis of the program is to prepare for independent clinical practice in the institutional setting.

Required Rotations:  

Drug distribution/IV adds – 5 weeks
Provincial Drug Information Center ( St Paul ’s Hospital) – 2 weeks
Internal medicine – 4 weeks
ICU/ID – 6 weeks
Pediatrics – 4 weeks
Medication Use Management – 2 weeks
Didactic lectures including pharmacokinetics, drug lit eval & clinical appraisal – 3 weeks
Geriatrics – 4 weeks
Practice Management – 2 weeks

Elective Rotations:

Approximately 8 weeks, please contact residency coordinator for information.

2008 – Renal (4 weeks), Psychiatry (4 weeks), Cardiology (4 weeks), Perinatology (4 weeks), Home and Community Care (4 weeks)

Minimum required credentials: B.Sc Pharmacy, Licensure in BC an asset

ORGANIZATION

Type: The Vancouver Island health Authority (VIHA) is one of the largest health organizations in Canada. The Pharmacy Practice Residency Program is primarily run from the South Island, which comprises the greater Victoria area including communities up to Mill Bay. All major medical services other than transplantation are provided.
Number of beds: Acute: 1455, Residential care 1900
Sites: Primary acute care sites include the Royal Jubilee Hospital and the Victoria General Hospital Opportunities may also exist for rotations in central and north Vancouver Island.
