ISMP Canada Opioid Stewardship – National Methadone and Suboxone Patient Handouts
The Institute of Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) Canada, in collaboration with provincial and national organizations, created patient handouts for methadone and suboxone as part of their Opioid Stewardship Project.
The handouts provide answers to common patient questions related to dosing, duration of therapy, administration, monitoring, and follow-up. The documents also highlight the precautions required in safe handling of opioid agonist therapies.
“Changes?” provides a brief overview for the first dose, and subsequent dose titrations.
“Continue?” sets patient expectation on the duration of their opioid agonist therapy.
“Proper Use?” discusses the proper administration, potential drug interactions, and safety precautions such as avoid driving or operating machinery when patients first start taking these medications.
“Monitor?” lists the potential side effects, their management, and when to seek help from a healthcare provider.
“Follow-up?” sets patient expectation on the frequency and potential tests for visiting their healthcare provider.
